DISTURBIA by Rihanna
Robyn Rihanna Fenty is a Barbadian singer, songwriter, fashion designer, and occasional actress. Rihanna has sold over 41 million albums and 150 million songs worldwide, making her one of the best-selling artists of all time. Many of her songs rank among the world's best-selling singles of all time, such as "Umbrella", "Take a Bow", "Disturbia", "Only Girl (In the World)", "S&M", "We Found Love", "Diamonds" and "Stay". Her third studio album's reissue, Good Girl Gone Bad Reloaded, was released in June 2008 with three new songs: "Disturbia", "Take a Bow", and the Maroon 5 duet "If I Never See Your Face Again". All three were released as singles and charted highly, reaching peak positions worldwide.
This dance/pop track about being in a state of mental anguish was co-written by Rihanna's boyfriend at the time Chris Brown, who also contributed backing vocals. The other co-writers were Andre Merritt and Robert Allen who together with Brown comprise his song writing team, the Graffiti Artists. The trio also penned Brown's hit "Forever."
This entered the Hot 100 at #18, the first single by the Barbadian singer to debut in the top half of the chart. The video for this song was directed by acclaimed fashion photographer David LaChapelle. Among the other videos he has directed include "Dirty," "I'm With You" and "The Voice Within" all by Christina Aguilera.
My Idea #1
When imagining an music video using this type of genre of music and scene, I would like to include a highly energetic video sequence due to dancing and lots of movement with little narration involved to create a good performance. For this set I would like to use the studio with a black gothic setting surrounding the characters in the video, mainly the artist of course.
Even though the video will not have much of a narrative feel, I would still like to have sequences showing a type of story with a girl having psycho problems being the main focus due to what is happening inside of her dark minded head, matching the lyrics to the song "disturbia, its like a darkness of the night". With the imagery being dark and mysterious with some disturbing elements, to show this I would like to involve some stage/acting styled dancing performances showing psychotic behaviour in their movements and characteristics. This would fit with the track nicely as the lyrics are mainly about a hidden darkness which links to the hidden darkness inside the girls head.
To make it more visually interesting in the video, we could add different lighting elements to the darkness of the studio with strobe lighting effects like a storm, and also smoke machines to highlight the actors/dancers on camera giving a eerie feel to it. This would fit into the type of loud and outgoing music the artist Rihanna performs and makes with the high intensity and energy of the video.
For costumes and make up style I would like the girl to be in a long flowy white dress to represent innocence of the mind but as the video goes on and we are introduced to whats inside her head, her outfit changes to a more darker feel with dark makeup, big hair and marked white dress. The dancers will be dressed in all black with dark scary makeup and wild hair with some ripped clothing to show there inner psychotic minds.
