Andrew Goodwin : Ilustration, Amplification and Disjuncture

ILLUSTRATION:
Illustration is the easiest and simplistic concept due to the way the video itself tells the story of the lyrics that are written. A good example of this lyrical form use are the band "Owl City" with their song of "Fireflies" allowing them to illustrate their ideas from their lyrics on screen.

           

This music video is a good excuse due to the imaginative way they use the colours and elements to express their music genre and ideas. An example of this is with the way the artists sings the word "fireflies" from the lyrics, the word comes up on the screen like a toy gadget.

There is a big use of toys as an main element in the video as well to express their imaginative ways.






AMPLIFICATION:
This is where the artist take on fictional roles within the narrative allowing images on the music video to amplify the lyrics to create and convey a deeper meaning that would not be picked up from the lyrics alone. An example of this use is Kanye West's music video "homecoming".





This is a good example due to the fact that the video clearly shows the journey of Kanye's home and the fact that it is well known to the artist himself personally through the imagery of the lyrics.

DISJUNCTURE:

This is where the connection between the lyrics of the song and the music video is very little to even none and sometimes the video may completely contradict itself. An example of this would be Lady Gaga's "You and I" which was released to express about her relationship with her boyfriend Luc Carl at the time.

Like many of her music videos, Lady Gaga's portrayal of her lyrics is very hard to make sense due to the different and quirky elements going on throughout the video. One point where the video almost connects to the lyrics is where gaga is wearing a wedding dress giving the idea of her being in love linking to her on off relationship with her real life boyfriend.
